I was raised up believing I was somehow unique; like a snowflake distinct among snowflakes, unique in each way you can see. And now after some thinking I’d say I’d rather be a functioning cog in some great machinery serving something beyond me.

The moral view of music piracy

It always surprises me when people defend pirating music. A couple of common arguments condoning it are:

  1. If I bought the album I can give it to someone, it’s just sharing.
  2. I’m helping to spread the name of the musician, they would want me to have it.

As far as I am concerned it can all be answered with sequencial facts. If you are prepared to accept the universal law that all people are equal and that if it is morally acceptable for an individual to do something it must then be moral for all people to it.

Let us assume that pirating music is morally acceptable. If everyone pirates music then the music industry would cease to exist and music would not be available to the public, and forms a contradiction.

Therefore, by pirating music you are elevating yourself above others who pay for music.
